File & Source Verification

Check integrity, release source and signatures before using software. Combine checks to inform your assessment; no single check guarantees safety.

Local Hash Calculation

SHA-256 produces a 64-character hexadecimal value from file contents. Compare it with the publisher’s hash for the exact file to check whether the contents match.

Do not upload confidential files to another service merely to check them. This calculator neither sends files over the network nor executes them.

Calculate SHA-256 on your device

Files are read locally and are not sent to the server. The 128 MiB limit avoids excessive memory use; use PowerShell for large ISO images.

Obtain the hash for the exact file and version from an independent official source.

Verify with PowerShell

Replace the example path with your file’s path. Use this approach for ISO images or large files.

SHA-256

Get-FileHash "C:\Downloads\setup.exe" -Algorithm SHA256

Compare the Hash field with the publisher’s value. A matching hash confirms integrity relative to that reference.

Digital signature

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:\Downloads\setup.exe"

Inspect Status and SignerCertificate. Compare a Valid status and signer identity with the publisher; an unsigned file alone is not proof of malware.

Check Publisher & Source

  1. Read the actual domain and avoid lookalike domains, short links and ads leading elsewhere.
  2. Follow the official website to its download page or publisher-linked repository.
  3. Compare file name, version, architecture and signer; stop if asked to disable protection or install unrelated components.
  4. If a hash differs or the source is unclear, do not run the file. Record the URL and consult the publisher.

Scan Files & Assess Results

  1. Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection and update Security intelligence.
  2. In Scan options, choose Custom scan and select the folder containing the file, or use your deployed security product’s file scanning feature.
  3. Review Protection history and alerts. Do not unblock a file before its source and impact are understood.

Defender interface and state depend on Windows version and management policy. A clean scan does not guarantee file safety.
